( Dutch, 1621 - 1650 )
A kitchenmaid ironing
Materials:
oil on panel
Measurements:
19.49 in. (49.50 cm.) (height) by 16.54 in. (42.00 cm.) (width)
Markings:
indistinctly signed and dated 'A. van Gaesb*** f. 47' (lower right, under the table)
Provenance:
With Herner Wengraf (exhibited VIIe Biennale des Antiquaires, Paris, 1981) Adriaen van Gaesbeeck was a Leiden portraitist and genre painter, probably a pupil of Gerrit Dou. Many of his pictures are in the style of Dou and his other pupils, such as Pieter van Slingelandt and Adriaen de Pape. Other influences were Rembrandt and Nicolaas Maes. The present work shows the particular influence of Quirin Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam. Since many of his works have been attributed to all of these artists, the present signed work is an important example of his oeuvre.~
